Setting Goals: A Simple Framework That Works
Success in any endeavor starts with setting clear and effective goals. A proven framework across health, business and fitness life for goal setting is the SMART criteria, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. In this article, we’ll dive into the SMART goal-setting method, providing you with an actionable guide on how to set and pursue goals that are not only well-defined but also highly attainable.
Specific Goals
The ‘S’ in SMART emphasizes specificity. To create a specific goal, ask yourself the five Ws: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. Define exactly what you want to accomplish and why it’s important. For instance, instead of a vague goal like “Get toned,” a specific goal would be “Lose 5 kilos in three months by jogging 10 miles each week”
Measurable Goals
‘M’ means that goals should be measurable, allowing you to track your progress and know when you’ve achieved them. Incorporate numbers or tangible criteria into your goals. For instance, if your goal is to walk more, make it measurable by setting a target like “Walk 8,000 steps every day”
Achievable Goals
Don’t set yourself up for failure. This is a common mistake during the goal setting process. ‘A’ emphasizes the importance of setting goals that are realistic and attainable. While it’s great to aim high, setting goals that are beyond your reach can be demotivating. Consider your current resources, skills, and constraints. An achievable goal should challenge you but remain within the realm of possibility.
Relevant Goals
The ‘R’ in SMART underscores the relevance of your goals. Why do you want to achieve this goal? Is it important to you? Keep asking yourself WHY? This should be something you can fall back on when your motivation seems low.
Your primary goal should align with your broader objectives and aspirations. Ask yourself if the goal is meaningful to you at this moment in your life. A relevant goal should contribute to your overall personal or professional growth.
Time-Bound Goals
Lastly, ‘T’ stands for time-bound. Attach a deadline to your goal to create a sense of urgency and commitment. Without a timeframe, goals can linger indefinitely. For example, instead of saying, “I’ll learn how to squat some day,” set a time-bound goal like “I will be able to squat my body weight in six months.” On a personal note, I used this strategy while learning Spanish. I signed up for an exam and had six months to prepare. Whenever I didn’t want to study, speak or read in Spanish- I thought about how I would feel after failing the exam. Guess what? This strategy works!
Setting SMART goals is a powerful strategy for breaking your goals into actionable plans. By applying the principles of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals, you’ll be able to see consistent progress which helps in positive reinforcement- which helps accelerate your results over time.
